We have featured some of the best modern day cop cars in this blog but it is also part of our responsibility as police car fans to look into the past. So we compiled a list of some of the best police cars in the past few decades. They might not be as fast nor as good looking as the ones that we have now but they were the best police cars during their prime. Here are the best police cars of old:

    1992 Ford Mustang

It is quite simple to document former police cars especially the high profile ones like the Mustangs tagged as Special Service Package. A lot of these cars are well maintained or easily restored just like the ’92 Ford Mustang above. It’s time of chasing the bad guys may have been over but the blue car still looks ready for it.

The Mustang makes use of a 5.0L V8 engine that gives out 225 horsepower linked to a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

This exact car was on the auction block and is said to be a former service of the Michigan State Police and described as a special package and high performance car used as pursuit vehicle during its hey days. This particular vehicle though was well handled and was designated for traffic control so it was not not used during wet and winter seasons.

    1984 Ford LTD

The 1984 Ford LTD we may say shared an awkward year as the Fox and Panther bodied LTD shared the showrooms during the early 80s. What we have here is the Fox LTD with the police trim. This was later joined by the Panther platform in the for of the Ford LTD Crown Victoria. Looking at it, these were the days when the Mustangs and the Fox variants were inexpensive for the police force.

This particular police car was recently on the collector’s block with the V8 5.0L engine by Mustang and improved suspension adopted from the LTD LX.

    1962 Plymouth Belvedere

The Plymout Belvedere above is also on sale online and once served as a service car of the state troopers. It has a generic look for a police cruiser without any identification marks to say what it state in the US it served.

It goes as a black and white police car with excellent chrome highlights. The interior is in pristine condition plus the V8 is still original and V8 strong.

nissan-gtr-policecarThe news items still cannot determine who will be issued the 2012 Nissan GTR. This car was setup by EVI Corporation who installs sirens and lights to a unmarked and unmarked cop cars. Click on the video below and you will agree that indeed it has been one of the projects of EVI:

No, they did not confiscate the Nissan GT-R from a drug dealer or a gangster. The only thing they will say is that the car was brought to them with only 13 miles on its dial. The strobe lights are made of really sleek LEDs.

We think we still have to dig up more if we really want to find out which law enforcement agency will be getting this mean police car.

The agency though is not the fist one to use a Nissan GT-R for police work. The cops in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates tapped the brute force of the GT-R back in 2009 as one of their interceptor vehicles. The first responders during fires in the Nurburgring.

Who knows where this Nissan GT-R will be going. If you are in Washington DC or Virginia, you might want to think twice, thrice before stepping on the pedal, or better yet do not speed up.

Electric cars (or EVs for short) have become rampant in the automobile world. Not only do they reduce the world’s fuel consumption, they’re all for the environment too. But we wonder, what if all police squad cars go electric. Can they wind stand the occasional wild goose chase? What if they run out of electric power juice? What now? Well, the occasional stopping for donuts and wild good chase in the big cities now sound like a bad idea but still, these electric vehicles would still look pretty good and downright practical in the suburbs.

Anyway, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced to the press the latest additions to the New York City fleet of cars. As of yesterday, the Big Apple has an additional 10 units of pure electric utility trucks for Navistar “E-star” for all those hauling jobs, 10 units of pure electric cargo vans for the Ford Transit Connect, which is a relatively good compact van, and last but definitely not the least, about 50 units of Chevrolet Volt hatchbacks , some of which are intended to be used as police squad cars.

The General Motors Inc.’s Chevrolet Volt first went on sale last December 2010 as a plug-in electric hybrid vehicle. It has received the title of being the most fuel-efficient compact car in the United States. When running on its lithium-ion battery alone, the Volt covers 25-50 miles.

These additional all-electric will join the existing 360 EVs already in the city as part of Bloomberg’s PlaNYC to help reduce the city’s CO2 emissions.

It seems to be a trend. Almost in line with Ford’s decision to finally let go of its panther platform and give its Police Interceptor a Taurus chassis, Hyundai now releases the Genesis sedan. This sedan is a done up Korean police car which thrills cop car fans out there. It looks especially impressive with the red and blue lights coming out of its grill. If you’re just dying to know, the Genesis Sedan carries either a 4.6L V8 engine or a more modest 3.8L V6. There’s no news about whether or not there will also be an adaptation of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

True to the principles of cop car fans out there, the Hyundai Genesis is driven from the rear. For police issue vehicles, Hyundai is expected to go for the more powerful V8 option. This engine can produce 375 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. That is, of course, if the car is “fed” only with premium fuel. A regular gas will only allow the V8 engine to produce 368 HP of power and 324 lb-feet of torque, tops.

The police force needs fast cars on the road. It is a good thing that automakers partner with the law enforcement to give the police a much needed zoom during high speed chases.

We have heard before of the Italian Polizia getting special training to maximize of their LP560-4 Lamborghini Gallardo to efficiently track down bad guys in combo with GPS technology. The police force of Britain and Lexus has teamed up for a more practical option by providing the Humberside constabulary with the quick super sedan Lexus IS-F.

The Humberside police force will surely make lives tougher for the hooligans in their jurisdiction. There has been a delivery of the Lexus IS-F but it is still not clear if the police will have a whole fleet of the very quick rides to boost their force.

They currently have vehicles from Subaru making most of their mobile fleet. The decision to switch to the Lexus was not very easy since the Lexus IS-F came with a regular sticker price. This is not the case for the Italian Lamborghini which has been known for their generous donations to their local police force.

GeigerCars tuned this Hummer H2 for a Texas-based county. The Texan Sheriff wanted the fastest Police Hummer in the world, and GeigerCars delivered with a 7.0 liter supercharged engine and a top speed of well over 150 miles per hour (and a spur from zero to sixty in about 6.5 seconds).

The Sheriff looks like a dumbass, though.

Press Release – Fastest Hummer H2 Police Car

GeigerCars.de Builds the World’s Fastest Police HUMMER. Unusual customer requests are the norm at GeigerCars.de, Europe’s leading tuner of American automobiles. But the request from a Texas sheriff to turn his new emergency vehicle into the world’s fastest police HUMMER, represented a special challenge even for the specialists from GeigerCars.de. After the conversion to the GeigerCars.de 7.0- liter supercharged engine with 700 hp / 515 kW and a peak torque of 904 Nm the black and white HUMMER reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. That should be fast enough for the sheriff to catch just about any speeder…

In order to lend the flashing red-blue light bar and ear-splitting siren more credence the engine specialists from GeigerCars.de installed a supercharged V8 engine with an enlarged displacement of 7.0 liters in the engine bay of the HUMMER H2.

The GeigerCars.de high-performance engine was fitted with a belt-driven supercharger with generously dimensioned intercooler. But that’s not all: The modifications to the engine also include special pistons, a precision-balanced crankshaft and titanium piston rods. The cylinder heads of the V8 engine were re-machined for optimized gas flow and fitted with a sport camshaft and reinforced valvetrain. A special intake system with sport air filter and a fully stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with high-performance manifolds and metal catalysts round out the conversion.

After reprogramming the engine electronics to calibrate the GeigerCars.de power components the supercharged eight-cylinder engine delivers a maximum power output of 700 hp / 515 kW at 5,500 rpm and produces a peak torque of 904 Nm at 4,260 rpm. Power is transferred to all four wheels via a modified four-speed automatic transmission. Despite a curb weight of 3.1 tons the police HUMMER H2 7.0 Kompressor from GeigerCars.de delivers sports car performance: The sprint from 0 – 100 km/h takes just 6.5 seconds, top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h.

This level of performance necessitates numerous GeigerCars.de modifications to the suspension. Immediate eye-catchers are the one-piece forged chrome king-size 10Jx28 wheels with Kumho 325/35 R 28 tires.

In addition GeigerCars.de upgrades the police car with professional suspension and brake tuning. The sport suspension lowers the ride height of the SUV by some 105 millimeters, and offers firmer damper settings. Sport sway bars reduce body roll in fast corners.

The GeigerCars.de high-performance brake system with 380-millimeter perforated and vented discs and eight-piston fixed calipers on the front axle delivers enormous fade-free stopping power.

After transporting the GeigerCars.de police HUMMER H2 7.0 Kompressor back to the US the vehicle will be equipped with state-of-the-art police communication technology and will then serve as the personal emergency vehicle of the county sheriff.

Chrysler, in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, recalls 20,283 Dodge Magnum and Charger police vehicles manufactured between 2006 and 2009. The recall is being made after reports that there is a defect in the gear’s column shifter.

Safety concern is the primary issue since a wrong gearshift position may displayed on the dashboard panel when the gear cable gets disconnected from the mounting bracket of the steering column. The wrong gear information might cause the police car to move without the intentions of the driver which may cause road mishaps.

The auto manufacturer has not received any reports of injuries caused by the problem but has documented 55 reports of the problem and complaints from 9 customers with regard to the Magnum and Dodge police vehicles. If you are planning to start a chase, think twice if you are in the jurisdiction of the Lazio Highway Police of Italy. Why? They have the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 as their ride.

Remember when we talked about the test Kuwait did with Audi S6 Police Cars? Well — apparently they didn’t like the German offer as much as they did the American offer by the Dodge people because they’ve just landed 150 Dodge Charger Police Cars in the middle east…

I have to say looking at these babies sitting in that parking lot — I would have gone for the audi’s ;)
